Job Description
The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying methods of complying with tax regulations, and acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, communicates potential risks, and notes potential changes in tax policy.
The Manager will be involved in marketing, networking, and business development within their area of expertise and may provide written tax advice to clients.
- Tax Compliance: ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensure Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) are followed by self and client service teams.
- Conduct top-level review of tax returns and resolve issues with the client; involve specialists where appropriate.
- Communicate with client and Assurance any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Plan and review tax processes, including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement progress and time versus budget, timely billing, and collection of accounts receivable.
- Manage client relationships and expectations; provide timely advice to clients.
- Identify when research is needed; clearly frame issues and report analyses.
- Apply firm and professional standards for preparation of tax returns and involve firm specialists as appropriate.
- Apply Firm policies and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48; apply ASC 740-10 and related Firm standards.
- Explain income tax provision components and uncertain tax positions to the client and discuss complexities of ASC 740-10.
- Coordinate with Assurance for tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates.
- Utilize and manage STS as needed.
- Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits by reducing current and future taxes.
- Consider CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client; develop work plans to organize STS assistance on ongoing projects.
- Serve as a technical resource; ensure client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA); assist with exam support; delegate projects effectively to seniors and associates.
- Develop in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, international, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, etc.).
- May organize and conduct internal CPE training in the area of specialization with Firm specialists.
- Introduce and develop new ideas to improve client position, reduce taxes or expenses, or provide non-tax benefits.
- Review studies of tax implications and offer clients alternative courses of action; capture lessons learned to improve processes.
- Other duties as required.
- Supervise associates and senior associates on projects; review work and provide feedback.
- Train associates and seniors on tools; act as a Career Advisor; manage workload; provide performance feedback.
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Five or more years of relevant tax experience; prior supervisory experience required; industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
- CPA, Attorney (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction), or Enrolled Agent (EA) required; other relevant certifications preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software preferred.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills; ability to delegate effectively.
- Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills; team-oriented; ability to manage and develop a team.
- Ability to compose written tax advice and maintain client relationships; executive presence as primary client contact for issues and resolutions.
