Substation Engineer Job Description
Support the development of project scopes, schedules, and budgets, and help ensure that all project milestones and financial targets are met. Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, and internal teams to coordinate activities and maintain alignment throughout the project lifecycle. Work independently while also providing guidance, mentorship, and oversight to less‑experienced EITs and Designers. Prepare engineering calculations and technical studies, including grounding analysis, lightning protection, and AC/DC load studies.
Develop equipment specifications for procurement and support factory acceptance testing as needed. Demonstrate a strong understanding of physical substation design, including yard layouts, plans, sections, grounding systems, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and bills of material. Apply knowledge of protection and control design, including panel arrangements, one‑line and three‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
Coordinate design activities with other internal groups such as Civil/Structural, Networks, and Transmission Line teams to ensure cohesive and integrated project delivery.

- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
- 3+ years of experience in substation projects and design
- Experience performing aspects associated with substation design, including One Line Diagrams, General Arrangements, and Control Schematics
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and electrical design software
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with substation design for 12kV thru 500kV desired, experience through 765kV is a plus
The office is located in Downtown Chicago, offering beautiful views and close access to public transportation. The work schedule requires a minimum of 3+ days in the office per week for collaboration. The office is currently being renovated for additional space and lobby enhancements.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chicago, IL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $38.46 - $46.54/hr.
