Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Interconnection Engineer with a strong electrical engineering background and deep experience in power generation infrastructure
, including MV/HV systems, substations, and collection systems
, to support renewable energy project development and execution. This role will be responsible for leading interconnection engineering efforts across a portfolio of solar PV and battery energy storage projects
, working closely with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, EPCs, and internal development teams.
The ideal candidate brings 6+ years of experience in the power, energy, or utilities industry, with hands-on experience reviewing and designing MV and HV electrical systems and managing interconnection processes from early-stage development through construction support.
Location: Chicago, IL (Hybrid; remote considered for exceptional candidates)
Travel: Up to 15%
Key Responsibilities- Lead interconnection activities for renewable energy projects from feasibility through executed Interconnection Agreements and construction support.
- Review and support the design of MV and HV electrical systems
, including substations, switchyards, collection systems, transformers, and POIs. - Prepare and review single-line diagrams, interconnection exhibits, equipment specifications, and technical submittals.
- Coordinate and review power system studies (load flow, short circuit, grounding, protection, and relay coordination) performed by utilities or consultants.
- Evaluate interconnection study results and cost estimates; identify technical risks and cost optimization opportunities.
- Serve as a primary technical point of contact with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, consultants, EPCs, and transmission owners.
- Support meetings with utilities and regulatory bodies, representing the company with technical credibility.
- Coordinate internal stakeholders across development, engineering, construction, and finance teams to align technical decisions with commercial objectives.
- Manage multiple interconnection efforts simultaneously across different project stages.
- Provide technical oversight, mentorship, and coordination for junior engineers or external consultants.
- Support construction-phase electrical scope coordination related to interconnection and grid compliance.
- Identify and communicate interconnection-related technical, schedule, and regulatory risks.
- Maintain organized project documentation and interconnection records.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of interconnection workflows, tools, and best practices.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
- 6+ years of experience in the power, energy, or utilities industry.
- Demonstrated experience with MV and HV electrical infrastructure
, including: - Substations and switchyards
- Distribution and transmission systems
- Transformers and protection systems
- Experience supporting or leading interconnection for power generation projects (renewables preferred).
- Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects concurrently across cross-functional teams.
- Experience managing or leading a diverse technical team or consultants.
- Strong working knowledge of power systems fundamentals.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Visio
. - Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to travel up to 15%.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.
- Experience with solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
- Familiarity with ISO/RTO interconnection processes (PJM, MISO preferred).
- Experience working with EPCs, utilities, or renewable energy IPPs.
- Experience reviewing construction drawings and supporting field execution.
- EIT or PE license (or progress toward licensure).
