Summary / Job Scope

The Safety Specialist, Terminals West is responsible for actively promoting and maintaining a safe working environment by conducting workplace inspections, investigating safety incidents, developing and implementing safety training programs, ensuring compliance with internal and external safety regulations, and advising management on risk mitigation strategies to prevent injuries and promote employee health and wellbeing. The position may also conduct or facilitate safety audits, safety committees, and training for employees on proper safety procedures and equipment usage.

Frequent travel to different Terminal locations throughout the U.S. market areas is required, with occasional travel to Canada.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify hazards, non‑compliance issues, and unsafe practices, including managing Facility Security Plans and scheduling security drills in compliance with Homeland Security.
  • Investigate workplace incidents and near misses to determine root causes, identify corrective actions, and implement preventive measures.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs covering hazard recognition, new hire orientation, PPE use, emergency procedures, and safe work practices, including LOTOTO, FSP, operator training, confined space, arc flash, working at heights, CPR/First Aid/AED, etc.
  • Assist in developing, updating, and enforcing company safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant occupational safety and health regulations.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, near misses, and injuries; analyze data to identify trends and implement preventive actions.
  • Promote a safety culture by communicating safety information through meetings, posters, and other channels, and by communicating safety expectations to customers when appropriate.
  • Monitor compliance with OSHA, DOL, Homeland Security regulations, industry standards, and company safety policies.
  • Work closely with management to address safety concerns, provide recommendations for improvements, and ensure safety is a top priority.
  • Lead a positive safety culture where everyone is committed to safety and works collaboratively to improve it.

    Thorough understanding of OSHA, DOL, Homeland Security standards and other relevant company safety standards.
