Position

We are seeking qualified candidates to join our team of construction engineers providing resident engineering services throughout the City of Chicago. Day-to-day responsibilities for transportation improvements located at various project sites include:

  • Supervise and inspect construction of improvements to ensure the work is in accordance with contract plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Prepare and manage necessary construction documentation in accordance with jurisdictional agency guidelines.
  • Measure and document construction progress for use in determining payment to the contractor. Ensure proper material inspection is provided.
  • Perform electronic database entry of project status details on a daily basis.
  • Modify the design of a project when needed to adapt to actual field conditions. Coordinate those design changes with the jurisdictional agencies as well as the design engineering firm.
  • Know or be able to obtain and learn the design and construction standards and guidelines set forth by jurisdictional agencies involved with the projects.
  • Survey and document the construction of the improvements to a level which allows for the preparation of as-built drawings.
  • Coordinate, perform, and supervise construction layout operations.
  • Meet and coordinate with material testing contractors based on project needs and schedule.
  • Meet with clients, contractors, other consultants, utility companies, residents, business owners, and others to discuss the project scope, schedule, and constructability concerns as required.
  • Maintain positive relationships with current and past clients.
  • Coordinate public and private utility work within the project limits during construction.
  • Mentor and provide hands-on assistance in teaching construction inspection, oral, and documentation skills to coworkers.
  • Work within project schedules and budgets.
  • Perform plan reviews and troubleshoot the constructability of project documents prepared by others.
  • Perform design duties as assigned during winter months while seasonal conditions do not permit project construction.

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is often loud. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited 4-year college or university.

Professional Engineering license within the State of Illinois.

Typically requires a minimum of 6-8 years of transportation engineering experience, which may include time spent in graduate-level study.

Experience should include involvement in progressively more complex projects.

Thorough knowledge of IDOT and CDOT construction specifications, policies and procedures.

Proficient in standard construction layout practices.

Fluent with computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and other applicable software packages.

Proficient in technical writing and oral communication.

Valid driver’s license in the state of Illinois; proof of insurability.
