SUE Crew Chief – Geospatial/ SUE Division, Chicago, IL

We are seeking a SUE Crew Chief to join our growing Geospatial/ SUE Division. This is an excellent opportunity to join a company with outstanding benefits and future career growth.

The position requires candidates to be physically able to operate and maneuver truck equipment and the tools used for underground utility exploration, designation and survey locations. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious with a strong work ethic and can follow company procedures and policy when performing SUE and survey duties. Day-to-day operations may involve performing SUE activities most of the day while performing as needed survey activities to collect SUE field data.

The ability to multitask is important to maintain workflow. The position may require travel within the office Geographic Region Location and other states as needed.

Responsibilities

Supervisory:

  • Acts as a crew leader, working with multiple field crews and supervising SUE staff as needed to complete projects safely, on schedule, and within the directed scope of work by Project Managers or Project Engineers/Surveyors.
  • Directs SUE tasks in the field
  • Leads tailgate safety meetings and develops site-specific Job Hazard Analyses
  • Develops and implements Maintenance of Traffic signage at each site
  • Communicates with clients and utility representatives
  • Coordinates with SUE, Survey and CADD staff for SUE-related tasks
  • Performs QA/QC on designated utilities and test holes
  • Leads field investigations
  • Trains lower-level SUE technicians on proper designating and test hole techniques

Field:

  • Secures equipment and guards against loss and theft
  • Reads and interprets roadway plans, as-builts and utility company markups
  • Leads field investigations
  • Designates all utilities, including complex telecommunications, cable TV, gas, electric, water, traffic control, and any other utilities encountered in the field
  • Capably uses multi-frequency pipe and cable locators and single-frequency induction devices (Metrotech 810, RD5000, Pipehorn)
  • Operates the GPR proficiently
  • Troubleshoots issues with designating equipment and performs basic repairs
  • Adheres to safety standards, including proper operation of both electronic and mechanical equipment
  • Maintains truck and electronic equipment daily, including fluid levels, filters, and pneumatic/hand tools
    • Skilled at using air lance to expose utilities in varying soil conditions and depths
    • Uses and maintains concrete saw properly
    • Jackhammer usage on varying pavement types
    • Applies proper tamping procedures and patches asphalt and concrete
    • Drives the designating vehicle and vacuum excavation truck
    • Understands vac truck operation and can troubleshoot and perform minor repairs
  • Maintains equipment and keeps crew’s assigned vehicle clean
  • Fills out the field book legibly
  • Completes field sketches
  • Records information for test holes
  • Records pole data
  • Survey experience is a plus. Maintains and operates a total station and/or GPS unit, including the data collector associated with the survey equipment. Follows WGI survey procedures for checking into established survey control when field locating SUE evidence. Uses standard feature coding descriptions when collecting point and line features associated with SUE designations and test holes.

    Office:

    • Completes QL-D linework
    • Submits One Call tickets
    • Assists with proposal preparation and take-offs
