Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a Railroad Public Projects Engineer to join our Class I Railroad Team
, supporting public improvement projects across northern Indiana and surrounding states
. This role is ideal for a driven and detail‑oriented engineer who wants hands‑on exposure to railroad coordination, field oversight, and public infrastructure delivery—while building a long‑term career in rail.

In this position, you will work closely with railroad personnel, public sponsors, and contractors to review designs, monitor construction activities, and ensure compliance with railroad standards. With regular field presence and direct involvement in design and construction phases, you’ll gain valuable experience and mentorship, with clear opportunities to grow into task leadership roles over time.

This role reports through AECOM’s Chicago office and offers the chance to contribute to impactful public projects while developing specialized expertise within a leading rail organization.

Responsibilities
  • Review sponsor plans, contractor submissions, and calculations for Railroad impacts and constructability.
  • Conduct 2‑3 days/week of on‑site monitoring for compliance with Railroad requirements.
  • Coordinate with railroad personnel, sponsors, and contractors during design and construction phases.
  • Maintain accurate project records, ensuring timely delivery of documentation while meeting quality standards.
  • Respond proactively to client requests and input.
  • Assist task leaders with administrative and financial tasks for a General Engineering Contract (GEC).
  • Perform tasks within budget and schedule under supervision.
  • Communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS in Civil Engineering (Structural emphasis) + 2 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • 2 years of experience in engineering design, construction inspection, or project management.
  • Valid US driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout the state of Indiana (2‑3 days a week) including but not limited to the Fort Wayne, Elkhart, Burns Harbor, and Hammond areas.

Preferred Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management, work ethic, and eagerness to learn.
  • 2+ years of freight rail industry experience with Public Improvement Projects.
