Job Summary

Hargrove is currently hiring a licensed Professional Electrical Engineer (PE) with deep experience in high‑voltage substation systems to join our growing team. This role focuses on the physical design, analysis, and execution of electrical substations up to 345 kV, supporting projects from conceptual planning through construction and commissioning. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and a commitment to quality, safety, and mentoring junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform physical design of electrical substations in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Prepare general arrangement drawings.
  • Create equipment, electrical, and control building layouts.
  • Develop elevation views.
  • Design cable trenches.
  • Specify equipment grounding and ground grids.
  • Implement lightning protection systems.
  • Produce conduit and cable tray drawings.
  • Design AC and DC power systems.
  • Design area lighting systems.
  • Generate bills of materials.
  • Conduct touch and step voltage analysis.
  • Perform substation grounding calculations.
  • Execute pre‑ and post‑energization harmonic studies.
  • Carry out short circuit studies.
  • Calculate mechanical force on bus bars due to fault currents.
  • Analyze load flow and reactive power flow.
  • Conduct harmonic filter analysis.
  • Review NERC compliance analysis.
  • Coordinate protective relay coordination.
  • Perform transient analysis.
  • Calculate slack‑span for transmission line spans.
  • Study corona performance.
  • Develop equipment and material specifications for outdoor switchyard equipment up to 345 kV.
  • Create procurement specifications and design scopes for engineered electrical equipment.
  • Specify vacuum and SF6 circuit breakers.
  • Specify motor‑operated and gang‑operated manual switches.
  • Specify potential transformers (PTs) and current transformers (CTs).
  • Specify station service transformers.
  • Specify insulators and surge arresters.
  • Specify station service battery systems.
  • Review, integrate, and manage vendor drawings and technical data.
  • Coordinate with vendors to ensure timely and quality delivery of drawings, materials, and equipment per project schedules.
  • Complete conceptual and preliminary designs for planning and estimating purposes.
  • Prepare supporting documentation for procurement, construction, and operations/maintenance activities.
  • Participate in and/or lead client meetings and job site visits to gather and communicate engineering data.
  • Follow Hargrove’s QA/QC program to ensure compliance across all design packages.
  • Mentor and support the development of less experienced engineers and designers in substation design.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in substation physical design.
  • Proven experience with high‑voltage systems up to 345 kV.
  • Strong document management, organization, and quality control skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Software Experience
  • AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Bentley Micro Station.
  • ETAP, SKM Power Tools, or ASPEN One Liner.
  • CYMCAP.
  • PLS‑CADD (or similar transmission line analysis software).
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
