Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Structural Engineering Project Manager to support a five-year, $3.9 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to improve Chicago’s water services. We work with a wide variety of clients planning, designing, and managing the construction of large- and small-scale water, wastewater, and conveyance projects for federal, state, and municipal agencies and private industry clients.

Requirements for the role include:
Professional Structural Engineer (SE) license and experience leading large capital improvement programs. Preferred is experience with large and complex water and municipal infrastructure projects.

The Facilities Engineering Project Manager will represent the Chicago Department of Water Management (DWM) with oversight of various service providers completing a range of CIP projects that include planning, designing, and construction oversight.

  • Serve as the Project Manager with structural engineering expertise responsible for the development and delivery of the capital improvement plan for major water system facilities, including water purification plants, intake structures, pumping stations, reservoirs, hydraulic structures, buildings, and large conveyance for raw and finished water supply tunnels.
  • Provide structural engineering technical oversight for project implementation; independently prepare engineering calculations; develop technical specifications, plans, and details.
  • Verify compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards/practices; modify established guidelines and devise new approaches as needed.
  • Coordinate and participate in project presentations to DWM and other external groups.
  • Lead conceptual project development, RFQ preparation, and participation in design consultant selection and negotiation of final scope and fee for various assignments.
  • Coordinate contract negotiations with design and construction management consultants to finalize project assignments.
  • Manage project teams and monitor consultants’ compliance with contractual commitments.
  • Monitor project production for compliance with schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
  • Supervise technical professionals and other project managers, including workload and staffing management.
  • Monitor and report financial and completion status of projects to client.
  • Perform such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering and 6+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Professional Engineering license (SE) in Illinois or ability to obtain one within first 6 months of employment.
  • Subject to a background and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 20 years of progressive experience in Water/Wastewater Facilities as an engineer and project manager.
  • Experience working on municipal projects.
  • Proven interpersonal skills, including client interaction, public speaking, and persuasive ability; strong project financial management and ability to lead diverse, multi‑disciplined teams.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
