A Senior Electrical Estimator is responsible for leading the full electrical estimating process for commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects. This role analyzes project documents, develops accurate and competitive estimates, and works closely with project management, engineering, and leadership teams to ensure bids are strategic, complete, and aligned with company goals.
Key Responsibilities- Review and interpret electrical plans, specifications, addendums, and scope documents.
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for all electrical systems including power distribution, lighting, controls, grounding, fire alarm, low-voltage, and specialty systems.
- Develop labor and material cost estimates using estimating software (Accubid, Con Est, Bluebeam, Trimble, Plan Swift, or similar).
- Analyze subcontractor and vendor quotes; ensure scope alignment and competitive pricing.
- Lead bid strategy discussions, evaluate risk, and determine pricing structures with leadership.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site walks, and design reviews.
- Prepare budgets, conceptual estimates, GMPs, and design-build deliverables.
- Coordinate with project managers and superintendents to ensure estimates reflect field conditions, means, and methods.
- Provide value engineering alternatives and cost-saving recommendations.
- Develop budgets for RFP responses and assist with proposal content.
- Maintain historical cost data and update unit pricing as markets change.
- Train and mentor junior estimators.
Skills & Qualifications
- 8–15+ years of electrical construction experience, including at least 3–5 years in estimating.
- Strong knowledge of NEC, local codes, installation practices, and electrical construction sequencing.
- Expert ability to read and analyze blueprints, specifications, and technical documents.
- Proficiency with major estimating platforms (e.g., Accubid, Con Est, McCormick, Bluebeam).
- Strong understanding of labor units (NECA/MCA) and productivity factors.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple bids simultaneously.
- Experience estimating projects ranging from $1M–$50M+, depending on company/market.
- Journeyman or Master Electrician license.
- Experience assisting with preconstruction or early design phases.
- Strong vendor and subcontractor relationships.
