Position Overview

We’re seeking an experienced Field Civil Engineer to join our Chicago Regional office and support the growing Great Lakes water market. The role offers the opportunity to travel across the Chicago region during the construction phase of projects.

Potential projects include drinking water (treatment, storage, and distribution), wastewater (treatment, collection, and conveyance), stormwater (collection, conveyance, detention, and green infrastructure). The position provides growth opportunities within one of the industry’s leading firms.

Responsibilities
  • Perform field activities such as site investigations, inspections, and assessments for Burns & McDonnell projects.
  • Provide resident engineering and inspection of construction projects to ensure contractors are building projects in accordance with plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Create field reports and documentation of daily work performed on project sites.
  • Produce accurate quantity data for use in generation of contractor pay estimates and material certification.
  • Coordinate with designers for shop drawing reviews, requests for information, and change orders.
  • Maintain communication with Project Managers and Section Manager throughout the course of the project to report progress and issues.
  • Solve technical problems related to the project parameters.
  • Interface with clients as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Work productively in an office setting during down time on project sites.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related ABET‑accredited program with 3+ years of civil engineering experience; consulting preferred.
  • Or Bachelor’s degree in civil or related engineering technology from an ABET‑accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam with 3+ years of civil engineering experience; consulting preferred.
  • Or Master’s degree in civil engineering with 2+ years of civil engineering experience; consulting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in standard civil engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical and quantitative problem‑solving skills with demonstrated critical thinking.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Micro Station, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS‑CADD, RISA‑3D, MathCADD or other hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, and civil analysis programs.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem‑solving skills.
  • Engineers in Training (EIT) certification preferred.
Compensation

Salary range: $– per year. The range is based on education, qualifications, experience, and location. Total compensation includes base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year‑end incentive bonus.
