Substation Senior Structural Engineer

HDR Engineering seeks a Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) to join our nationally ranked Power Delivery team. The role focuses on structural design for high‑voltage (up to 500 kV) substation projects, including steel structures and foundation analysis. Candidates will collaborate with Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams across multiple office locations, lead project engineering, and mentor junior staff.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, review, and execute structural engineering tasks for substation members such as rolled steel, lattice framing, and folded plate shapes.
  • Perform foundation design for drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other support systems using industry‑standard software.
  • Support substation layout design, plans, elevations, details, and bills of material.
  • Prepare and review construction and materials specifications.
  • Assign project tasks, provide technical guidance, and coordinate quality checks per HDR’s Quality Management System.
  • Collaborate with civil/structural and transmission line engineers for cross‑training and resource sharing.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, and oversee or train Project Engineers, EITs, and design staff.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects with teams in diverse locations.
  • Assist in technical papers, presentations, and project reviews as needed.
  • Travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license or ability to obtain; SE license in Hawaii/California is a plus.
  • 10+ years of design experience on high‑voltage substation projects (up to 500 kV).
  • Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318, and related standards.
  • Proficiency with design software such as PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile or equivalents.
  • Prior consulting firm experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Self‑starter ability to work independently or within a team.
  • Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience related to building or substation design.
  • Professional Engineering license recognized by the local licensing board.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar software.
  • Ability to perform design calculations and layouts for steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.
  • Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.
  • Experience with an architectural/engineering or consulting firm.

Compensation and Benefits

Target salary range: $132,107 – $204,500 (based on experience and location).
