The Teacher is a qualified professional educator who meets the requirements to teach in a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Chicago. As a teacher in a Catholic school, the Teacher acts as a representative of the Catholic Church to the students, both as a role model and through the various tasks, actions and other responsibilities assigned to the Teacher. The Teacher is a ministerial employee because of the Teacher's role as both a representative of the Church and as a communicator of the Church's message to the children entrusted to the Church's care.
The Teacher is hired by and is directly accountable to the principal. The Teacher agrees to abide by the educational policies and procedures of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Office of Catholic Schools as well as comply with the educational policies and procedures of the local school. The Teacher cooperates with the principal and staff in providing an educational environment that promotes the ministry of Catholic education.
The Teacher is a representative of the Archbishop of Chicago, effectuating his ministry of Catholic education and the religious teachings and doctrine of the Catholic Church at the level of the local school.
The 2nd Grade Self-Contained Teacher at Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts is responsible for creating a nurturing, faith-filled, and academically rigorous classroom environment that supports the intellectual, social, and spiritual development of each student. Rooted in the Catholic tradition, the teacher fosters a love of learning while helping students grow as compassionate and responsible members of the community. Teachers implement engaging, differentiated instruction in core subjects while supporting the school's mission of cultivating academic excellence, creativity through the arts, and a strong sense of community and service.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction and Curriculum Plan and deliver engaging lessons in all core subjects including religion, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Use differentiated instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students and promote strong foundational reading and math skills. Integrate creative and arts-based approaches to enhance student learning and encourage innovative thinking. Utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
Collaborate with learning specialists and the student support team to support students who require additional academic or social-emotional support. Faith Formation and Catholic Identity Model Catholic values and integrate faith into daily classroom life. Lead students in prayer and participate in school liturgies, including weekly Mass and service initiatives. Encourage students to develop compassion, service, and ethical responsibility within the school and broader community.
Classroom Environment Create a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom culture where all students feel supported and challenged. Maintain an organized and engaging classroom environment that supports collaboration, creativity, and student independence. Implement effective classroom management strategies consistent with the school's mission and expectations. Collaboration and Community Engagement Work collaboratively with grade-level teachers, specialists (art, music, drama, STEM, Spanish, physical education), and support staff to provide a well-rounded educational experience.
Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and classroom activities. Participate in school events, professional development, and the broader life of the school community. Professional Responsibilities:
