Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Instructional Design & Academic Technology for Learning Technology Solutions, the Extra Help Instructional Development Specialist supports the university's transition from Blackboard to Canvas by advising instructors on course design, accessibility, and effective use of digital learning technologies. This role focuses on consultation, instructional guidance, and faculty support to promote well‑organized, accessible, and pedagogically sound Canvas courses.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide one‑on‑one consultations with instructors transitioning courses to Canvas, advising on course structure, navigation, and learning activities
  • Guide faculty in applying Canvas best practices, templates, and consistent course organization standards
  • Support instructors in aligning course materials and assessments with learning outcomes and student engagement strategies
  • Advise faculty on improving accessibility of course materials using YuJa Panorama and university accessibility standards
  • Recommend strategies for inclusive course design and accessible instructional practices
  • Review course components and provide feedback on usability, accessibility, and student experience
  • Assist in developing instructional guides, workshops, and resources related to Canvas and digital teaching practice
  • Support delivery of training sessions or consultations in collaboration with LTS staff
  • Stay current with emerging instructional technologies and practices that support teaching and learning
  • Participate in team meetings and Canvas transition initiatives as assigned
  • Perform related duties or special projects as needed to support the Canvas transition
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities such as history, political science, literature, journalism, communications, or philosophy

AND Six (6) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching

  • Baccalaureate degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities

AND Eighteen (18) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching

  • Experience supporting faculty in an LMS environment such as Canvas or Blackboard
