Job SummaryThe General Music Instructor will be responsible for teaching introductory group music classes to students ranging ages 6-14. Instructor will be responsible for developing curriculum and assessments, establishing collaborative partnerships with the community, and encouraging students to explore their musical gifts.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Teaching group music lessons for the Kroc after-school program and summer day camp; classes should prioritize exploratory music-making, giving students the opportunity to become familiar with basic musical concepts (e.g., pitch, rhythm, melody, etc.). Experience with Kodaly, Dalcroze, or Orff pedagogical methods may be helpful in this role.
- Effectively design and implement curriculum, assessments, and lesson plans for each class taught and provide a summary of activities to the Music and Gospel Fine Arts Manager.
- Develop and implement ongoing collaborative partnerships for music programming with schools and organizations.
- Actively participate in the recruitment and outreach efforts set forth by the Fine Arts Director.
- Attend assigned staff meetings.
- Willing to teach additional classes and workshops as needed.
Skills And Abilities
- Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, or equivalent qualified performance experience.
- Experience: Three years required, five years preferred teaching experience either in a classroom setting or private/group lessons. Applicants with experience in General Music [Elementary – Middle] will be prioritized.
- Evidence of experience in curriculum development.
- Able to work with children, parents and staff in a leadership capacity.
- Posesses a positive attitude and the ability to be flexible; demonstrates initiative and diligence.
- Proven experience in General Music instruction.
- Punctual and reliable; able to arrive prepared and start classes on time.
- Possesses working knowledge of music literature and current trends in music education.
- Has a philosophy of education and child development that is consistent with that of The Salvation Army.
- Willing to promote the mission of the Salvation Army.
- Must complete all required training in Litmos within 30 days of hire, to include Safe from Harm, Illinois Mandated Reporter, and Chicago Bystander and Harassment Prevention training.
- This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
- This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
- Satisfactory speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity.
- Lifting, pulling and pushing of materials up to 25 pounds.
- Requires bending, squatting and walking.
- Standing for extended periods of time.
- This job is performed at times in an office environment at normal room temperature. The noise level in this work environment is usually low.
- For other duties of this job, such as outdoor special events and community center activities, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
- The noise level in the work environment at these events is usually moderate to loud.
