MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.
Paid Interns
Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.
Required Documents:
- Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
- Cover letter stating interest in position.
- Resume.
- Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2026/2027 school year.
- Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
- You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is seeking a current student interested in an internship with the Office of the Board of Commissioners. The role involves monitoring social media trends and proposing creative strategies to boost engagement and expand the District's online presence. Responsibilities include creating engaging social media content-including graphics, captions, and videos-to showcase MWRD programs, events, and initiatives.
Monitor current social media trends and recommend creative strategies to boost engagement and grow our online presence. Support the scheduling and timely posting of content across platforms to maintain a consistent digital presence. Assist in curating a monthly newsletter that highlights MWRD's impact and achievements. Participate in community events to promote sustainability and represent MWRD's mission.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
- Proficiency in social media management tools such as Hootsuite, Buffer, or Sprout Social.
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro) or Canva is preferred.
- Strong ability to work independently, take initiative, and proactively contribute ideas and improvements.
- A strong enthusiasm for environmental issues, water conservation, and sustainability.
- Must have reliable transportation to travel to/from various worksite locations.
- Must be available to participate with staff at weekend events.
Applicants must be a current graduate or undergraduate student seeking a degree in communications, marketing, liberal arts, sociology, political science, history or environmental science.
