Jump Start is a volunteer-based program that focuses on providing academic tutoring to incarcerated youth. The program was founded in 1995 by the Literacy Volunteers of Illinois (LVI) and operates through the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice. This position is an in-person position at the Phoenix Emerging Adult Career & Education (PEACE) Center at IYC-St. Charles, 3825 Campton Hills Rd., St.
Charles, IL 60175.
- Plan tutoring sessions and provide one-to-one tutoring to referred youth
- Conduct basic skills and literacy assessments of those referred
- Encourage and support those tutored by helping them develop confidence and a positive attitude about learning
- Select materials and approaches that are suitable for the student’s ability and needs
- Track student’s progress through regular assessments and submit reports
- Maintain records of tutoring sessions, including materials used, lessons reviewed, progress made
- Participate in initial and in-service tutor and facilities training, as requested or required
- May provide supervision and/or support to other tutors
- May assist with data collection and/or grant research or writing
