Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • The candidate must have a High School diploma or its equivalent and experience working with children ages 6-14.
  • The candidate must be dependable, punctual, willing to take direction and have good judgment.
  • Be confident with working with small and larger groups of campers to implement the program curriculum.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with the STEAMers Camp Instructor and other camp counselors to successfully implement daily tasks.
  • The duties and responsibilities of the position may change as needed by the program and/or the college.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the Morton College core values of compassion, fairness, respect, responsibility, tolerance and truth.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and/or the Arts.
  • Completion of one semester of a course in education or child development.
  • English-Spanish bilingual.
  • First Aid certification.
Responsibilities

The Summer Camp Counselor assists the session’s instructor as directed. Lead acts as a role model to a group of program participants to ensure appropriate student behavior while ensuring student safety at all times. In addition, the counselor assists the campers with activities and projects as well as with preparation and clean-up of class materials and the instructional areas.

  • Assist and supervise a small (5-8) group of children and larger groups (9-30) under the direction of an instructor or facilitator.
  • Assist external instructional providers with classroom activities.
  • Conduct daily inventory of the instructional materials and report the needs to the Instructor.
  • Notify parents in a situation of child’s illness or injury.
  • Ensure that sign-in and sign-out procedures are followed by the children’s designated adults.
  • Assist with preparation of session materials.
  • Assist with clean-up of materials and instructional areas, including returning materials to the proper storage space and/or helping instructor/facilitator move materials to their mode of transportation.
  • Collaborate with other camp counselors and instructors in the classroom or large group activities.
  • Provide suggestions for session programs and/or speakers to department staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
