Position Purpose

Develop students' interest, abilities, talents and skills for artistic expression and creativity in the visual arts, as well as aesthetic understanding and appreciation by implementing district‑approved curriculum; document teaching and student progress; develop lesson plans; model necessary skills; provide a safe and optimal learning environment; provide feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and administer school art curriculum consistent with district goals and objectives.
  • Create lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into engaging learning experiences.
  • Teach art skills—including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three‑dimensional art—to elementary students.
  • Foster aesthetic concepts and appreciation, enabling students to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student skills, modify instruction for individual needs, including special needs students, and provide individual or small‑group instruction.
  • Demonstrate techniques in drawing, painting, modeling using standard and teacher‑prepared aids.
  • Organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
  • Instruct proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Evaluate each pupil's performance and growth, preparing progress reports.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions for the school and community, and sponsor outside exhibits as needed.
  • Continuously acquire professional knowledge by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or research.
  • Maintain accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance per district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement and communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ensure student conduct conforms to school and district policies, establishing standards for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with other school staff, especially within the grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, art materials, instructional aids, and supplies, maintaining inventory records.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Use standard office equipment such as personal computer, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Work Schedule

Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Unit Contract.

Skills and Abilities
  • Current art instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy, differentiating instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Art curriculum and concepts.
  • Applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Computer network system and software applications.
  • Organization and coordination.
  • Effective communication with students and parents.
  • Self‑evaluation for performance and professional growth.
  • Cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Qualifications Profile Certification/License
  • Illinois State Certification as an Art Teacher or as required for position.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education
  • Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
Experience

Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level and/or subject is a plus.
