The Extra Help Program/Student Advisor for TRIO Student Support Services provides intensive cognitive and non‑cognitive foundations that support academic and personal achievement for a targeted population of undergraduate students in the TRIO Student Support Services program. The position leads program participants in overcoming barriers to success, encourages active engagement and inquiry‑based learning, and institutes goal setting to achieve the goals of the grant.

TRIO is a federally funded program that serves low‑income, first‑generation, and students with disabilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement programs that enhance and support student motivation, engagement in learning that leads to enhanced self‑perception, self‑confidence and self‑image.
  • Form and lead student learning communities to improve academic knowledge e.g. individual and group tutoring, cohort engagement for integrative learning, and facilitation of student‑faculty interactions.
  • Develop and implement programs that enhance and support the non‑cognitive development of low‑income and first‑generation students such as development of leadership skills and mentoring activities that facilitate transition to college, persistence, critical thinking skills, and pursuit of excellence.
  • Develop and implement a high impact retention program that charts students’ challenges and strengths, analyze results, and assist students in setting realistic and productive short‑trm and long‑term goals for personal and academic success.
  • Develop and implement grant mandated and non‑mandated programs that address academic behavior, self‑regulating learning habits and effective problem‑solving techniques.
  • Develop and implement a cohort mentoring program that matches students’ needs, increases sense of belonging, deploy effective methods to overcoming real life barriers and engagement with the campus community.
  • Serve as Coach to facilitate and provide guidance to the population of students whose lower socio‑economic backgrounds have limited their family support, positive parental experiences, and guidance necessary to navigate day‑to‑day college life.
  • Serve as Coach to guide students toward academic excellence, self‑direction on seeking scholarships, research opportunities and developing habits that promote academic success.
  • Develop and coordinate student program recruitment activities, including attending college day/night programs and college fairs.
  • Disseminate information at campus open houses or other settings.
  • Assists or develops and maintains promotional and marketing plans; e.g. social networks, list serves, and email blasts.
  • Communicate with faculty and departmental administrators on behalf of students.
