About the Institution

Chicago State University (CSU) is the oldest public university in the Chicago metropolitan area and is Illinois’ only four‑year U.S. Department of Education‑designated Predominantly Black Institution. CSU serves over 1,500 undergraduate and 900 graduate students from 28 countries and 36 states.

Job Description
  • Provides academic program‑specific advisement to Sophomore Academy participants regarding course requirements, transfer articulation, and academic progress; assists students with course selection and sequencing; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree completion; and communicates academic progress and findings to university administration to ensure compliance with financial aid and athletic requirements.
  • Develops individual student action plans to achieve academic goals, career objectives, and personal growth; evaluates transcripts to determine student eligibility and progress; assists students with academic petitions and graduation applications; maintains and manages student academic files in accordance with recognized protocols; follows rules and regulations applicable for FERPA, Title IX, etc. compliance.
  • Effectively uses institutional technological systems such as Banner, CAPP, Early Alert Warning Systems, and other web‑based software.
  • Provides referral services for students to appropriate campus resources for assistance, study skills, tutoring, counseling, etc.
  • Develops and coordinates student recruitment activities, including attending college day/night programs, college fairs and high schools; disseminates information regarding registration procedures.
  • Provides academic program‑specific advisement to students regarding admissions policies/procedures and general academic program requirements; describes courses; and disseminates information regarding registration procedures.
  • Provides information and/or advises students on financial assistance, student work programs, and/or scholarships available in the university; advises students on work opportunities in the area and placement opportunities in local industry, and directs students to career placement services.
  • Prepares and produces statistical reports and other formal records in accordance with applicable laws and procedures; reviews and recommends record management and other academic processing procedures.
  • Attends all academic advisor training workshops as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Demonstrated work experience in the area of academic advising or related field.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Customer and Personal Service knowledge of principles and processes for providing quality educational advising services, including student needs assessment, quality standards for services, and evaluation of student satisfaction.
  • Administration and Management knowledge of business and management principles involved in the presentation and delivery of academic programs, strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, recruitment methods, and coordination of people resources.
  • Active Listening – giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Critical Thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Knowledge of educational, evaluation, and measurement principles, practices, methods and techniques, university policies and procedures.
  • Speaking – talking to others to convey information effectively; ability to develop a rapport with students.
  • Written Expression – the ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • University or college level advising experience.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of computer technology and software applications for processing registrations, enrollments, and tracking student progress.
    • Ability to deal extensively and effectively with a wide variety of individuals using excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills to advise students with respect to their academic goals.
    Physical Requirements

    May need to sit for long periods of time and carry objects up to 25 pounds.

    Work Environment

    Office and classroom setting.
