Overview

The position is located at Harold Washington College and may require day, evening, and/or weekend working hours in person.

Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Japanese (or a related field)
  • Three or more years teaching Japanese in a university or community college setting
  • Experience studying or living in a francophone country
  • Understanding of the needs of the World Language student in a community college environment
  • Significant experience working in a multicultural classroom
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, commitment to integrating new technologies, and ability to inspire, motivate, and empower students
Desired Skills and Experience
  • Developing curriculum and instructional materials
  • Developing integrated skills course models
  • Integrating LMS and online text components in language learning
  • Integrating evolving technologies in language learning
  • Using a variety of teaching and delivery methods
  • Teaching language through content
  • Instruction in speaking, reading, writing, and listening
  • Teaching critical thinking and comparative culture
  • Written and oral assessment
Essential Functions
  • Construction of course syllabi consistent with departmental and college requirements
  • Development and preparation of lesson plans, presentations, and instructional materials
  • Delivery of instruction with emphasis on student‑centered activities and active learning
  • Consultation with and tutoring of students on a one‑on‑one basis
  • Maintenance of clear records on student performance, attendance, and grading factors
  • Compliance with departmental and institutional policies, including submission of grades, keeping office hours, and making instructional decisions
  • Participation in departmental and institutional assessments of student learning

Salary and Benefits

Salary: $800.00 per contact hour (determined based on education, knowledge, skills, and abilities, and internal equity). Benefits include a comprehensive health and welfare package, long‑term savings and investment plans (403(b) & 457(b)), a pension plan with the State University Retirement System (SURS) Plan, generous vacation, holiday, personal and sick days, and tuition reimbursement.
