Compensation

Hourly Salary: $25.00 – $25.00.

Program Overview

NM Scholars offers an 8‑week summer intensive program for high‑school students, held at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Coordinators manage day‑to‑day activities, curriculum design, student mentorship, and program evaluation.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the Summer Intensive curriculum design and implementation, coordinating and facilitating the program.
  • Maintain daily reflections on students’ improvement through attendance at lectures and presentations.
  • Design lesson plans on writing techniques, meeting students regularly to work on summer research projects and presentations.
  • Support and reinforce students’ strengths and experiential knowledge.
  • Promote a college‑culture environment similar to current remote learning.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for one cohort of students and provide guidance, advice, and mentorship.
  • Handle day‑to‑day responsibilities, including teaching research curriculum and keeping students on track.
  • Develop and grade homework, projects, exams, and assess participation and attendance.
  • Maintain records of grades, attendance, and participation.
  • Escort students to and from breakfast, lunch, lectures, and labs, ensuring adherence to the schedule.
  • Work with medical‑student program interns to maximize the Scholars’ summer experience and delegate responsibilities.
  • Assist with research activities, including conducting student interviews and collecting data.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to improve program implementation.
  • Attend regular meetings with the NM Scholars team.
  • Participate in program orientation (late June).
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s‑level graduate student with experience and/or interest in education, teaching, leadership, high‑school or college student development.
  • At least one year of experience in curriculum design and development, inside or outside traditional classrooms.
  • Ability to work virtually.
  • Past experience working with high‑achieving high‑school or pre‑college students.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow directions independently.
  • Professional communication with internal and external audiences.
  • Team player with ability to work in a time‑pressured environment.
  • Well‑rounded individual who enjoys guiding and mentoring youth from under‑sourced communities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Ph.D.‑level graduate student in Higher Education or related field.
  • Background in program coordination.
  • 2–3 years of experience in curriculum design and development, inside or outside traditional classrooms.
  • Past STEM or health/science pipeline experience.
  • Knowledge of under‑represented student experiences, college access and readiness, equity, and diversity.
  • In‑depth knowledge of college access and retention in higher education and ability to apply this to health‑science careers.
  • Experience in writing development at secondary or post‑secondary levels.
  • Outgoing personality.
