Rank: Assistant Professor
College/School: Chicago, IL - College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences
Position DescriptionThis hire is ideally suited to exist in the intersection among the Departments of Catholic Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, and Modern Languages. We would seek an interdisciplinary scholar whose doctoral work was in the fields of theology, history, sociology, or Spanish language and literature. Ideally, this scholar would be comfortable teaching classes that fulfill the religious dimensions, philosophical inquiry, historical inquiry, or arts and literature learning domain, as well as contribute to the first‑year program including Discover or Explore Chicago, and LSP 200 Seminar on Race, Power, and Resistance.
The scholar would be able to teach popular classes such as CTH 182 Latino Religious Experience (RD), REL 291 Liberation Theologies (RD), and LST 290 Latino/a Liberation traditions (PI), as well as Spanish‑language offerings of LSP 110/111/112 and advanced courses in Spanish. We could imagine the scholar developing courses such as:
Faith and Social Justice in Latino Communities, Afro‑Latinx Religiosity and Catholic Syncretism, and Latinx Spirituality and the Catholic Imagination or other courses in their areas of expertise.
We foresee the scholar being housed in the Department of Catholic Studies and assisting in programming with the Latin American and Latino Studies Department and the Modern Languages Department. The joint proposal is that the appointment would teach a 3/2/1 for CTH, LST, and MOL. Because of a recent faculty departure, the College currently does not have any scholars who study Latine Catholicism.
Given the worldwide prominence of DePaul's Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology, this is a major lacuna in our faculty.
A PhD is preferred at the time of appointment, but ABD candidates will also be considered.
Application InstructionsPlease submit a CV, cover letter, statement of teaching philosophy, and three confidential letters of recommendation. The review of applications will begin on December 19, 2025.
General Compensation/Benefits StatementDePaul University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the qualifications, education, experience, and training of the selected candidate, the scope and responsibilities of the position, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market…
