TRUMAN COLLEGE – We at Harry S. Truman College are looking to build our pool of talented, dynamic English adjunct instructors for the spring semester and beyond. GeneralResponsibilities
- Design activities, assignments, and assessments within courses to meet learning outcomes and promote students’ active participation in their own learning.
- Demonstrate flexibility in learning and using course-related texts and materials, Brightspace learning management system, Faculty Center in my.ccc.edu, and Navigate.
- Create an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps them problem solve using discipline‑specific thinking strategies.
- Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments while giving prompt feedback to ensure classroom instruction leads to student learning and attainment of course learning outcomes.
- Hold office hours before or after class to help students reach their academic, personal, and career goals.
- Foster a classroom environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
- Respond promptly to college and department communications and communicate with mentor and assistant chair about challenges as they arise.
- Participate in department‑wide meetings and assessments outside of class time.
- English: M.A. in English Language or Literature or 18 graduate hours in English, Literature, Creative Writing, Composition/Rhetoric, or print journalism.
- Reading: M.A. in Reading or M.A. in Linguistics or M.Ed. in Adult Literacy–Reading or M.S.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction (inclusive of Literacy/Reading), or M.A. and 18 graduate hours in Reading.
- Teaching experience at the college level preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written skills required with the ability to communicate persuasively with tact and diplomacy.
- The ability to work in a culturally diverse work environment.
- Experience with a diverse, multilingual student population desired, as well as a commitment to the open access mission of the community college.
- Disposition toward developing the competencies outlined in the City Colleges Academic Excellence Pillars.
- Knowledge of Brightspace or a similar Learning Management System preferred.
- Prior experience with online teaching (via Zoom) and/or online teaching certification preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
