Overview

Experienced Interior/Exterior Designer (Residential Focus) - Chicago. Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects is seeking an experienced, creative, and motivated Interior/Exterior Designer to support high-end residential projects. This role combines architecture and outdoor environments to create cohesive, livable spaces. You will collaborate with landscape architects, architects, contractors, and homeowners to deliver integrated designs from concept through installation. Our work blends exterior spaces with the home, creating gardens where architecture and landscape speak the same language.

Your work will help define how clients experience comfort, beauty, and nature every day. You will work with existing Hoerr Schaudt clients in collaboration with internal design project teams. As part of the growth of this position, you will also be expected to bring new clients to the firm.

Responsibilities
  • Design & Concept Development:
    Create exterior design concepts that complement landscape architecture plans for residential properties; develop space plans, detailed drawings, elevations, material palettes, and 3D renderings in collaboration with HS project teams.
  • Exterior furnishings and lighting:
    Design outdoor furniture and fixtures for patios, pool areas, outdoor kitchens; create lighting plans and related exterior elements; ensure furnishings support the architectural style of the home and site conditions.
  • Client

    Collaboration:

    Lead homeowner consultations to establish project goals, lifestyle needs, and aesthetic direction; present concepts and final design packages clearly; maintain ongoing communication to manage expectations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Project Coordination:
    Work closely with landscape architects to integrate exterior design elements into site plans; collaborate with architects, builders, mill workers, and specialty contractors; conduct site visits during design, construction, and installation phases.
  • Material & Product Sourcing:
    Source exterior materials, fixtures, finishes, furnishings, and custom elements; prepare detailed specifications and manage vendor relationships; collaborate with Summerfield Trading on purchasing furniture and accessories.
  • Technical

    Skills:

    Produce high-quality drawings and renderings using AutoCAD, Sketch Up, InDesign or equivalent; utilize Adobe Creative Suite for client presentations and design documentation; apply knowledge of residential construction practices and design standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Interior Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in residential interior/exterior design; experience collaborating with landscape architecture teams is a strong plus.
  • Strong portfolio showing integrated indoor/outdoor residential projects.
  • Knowledge of materials suited for outdoor environments and a variety of climates/regions.
  • Excellent communication, client presentation, and project management skills.
  • Familiarity with local permitting and construction processes; professional certifications (NCIDQ, LEED, or state licensure) are desirable but not required.
