The Section of Adult and Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is consistently recognized as one of the finest endocrinology centers in the U.S. The University of Chicago's endocrinology program has a reputation for progressive therapies and leading-edge research.

Research Accomplishments

The Section is a national leader in research in the treatment of endocrine diseases and disorders. Work in diabetes, thyroid and sleep disorders has been advanced by The University of Chicago endocrinology faculty. Research is supported by NIH and non-federal grants. The Section is home to one of 16 NIH funded Diabetes Research and Training Centers. The Kovler Diabetes Center (Louis Philipson, MD, Ph.D.

-Director) combines clinical care, basic and clinical research, and education in diabetes and metabolic disorders. The Center’s goals include improving patient care and developing new treatments through research into molecular and genetic bases for types I and II diabetes and the role of obesity.

Education and Training

The academic program includes education for medical students, interns, residents, and fellows. The program encompasses outpatient clinics, inpatient areas, and laboratories with active student participation. The Adult Endocrine Fellowship and Pediatric Endocrine Fellowship programs train physicians for careers in endocrine investigation in children, adolescents and adults, aiming to prepare physician-scientists for academic research careers.

Patient Care

The Section offers outpatient and inpatient diagnostic and treatment programs, and an endocrine hormone assay laboratory. The Adult Endocrinology Consultation Service provides evaluation and management of hospitalized patients with endocrine disorders. Special clinical programs cover overactive thyroid, thyroid growths, pituitary tumors, water metabolism abnormalities, hirsutism, and weight control problems.

Job Summary

The Section Administrator will manage the combined administrative, financial, academic and clinical affairs of the Section of Endocrinology and Pediatric Endocrinology in the Department of Medicine. The Administrator will serve as the lead administrative officer for the Section, planning, coordinating and directing broad and complex financial and management functions to support teaching, medical research and clinical care.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for the Section’s financial performance.
  • Manage implementation, direction, and policy development in finance (revenue/expense management), professional fee billing, grants/contracts, human resources, facility operations, and fellowship training programs.
  • Develop or direct accounting systems for the section's fiscal affairs to optimize income and control expenditures.
  • Provide financial analysis and reports to the section chief and departmental administration.
  • Conduct or direct studies related to financial management and accounting.
  • Direct the preparation of the section's operating budget, including staff, faculty salaries, recovery, and all non-salary expenditures; provide guidance to the section chief and faculty.
  • Collaborate with faculty, physician billing offices, and the hospital to identify chargeable professional fee tests, ensure billing data integrity, monitor accuracy of reports, and assess billing effectiveness.
  • Assist in Clinical Operations management including billing, credentialing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Work with physician leaders, UCPG, BSD, and UCMC administration on clinical operations issues affecting ambulatory practice and hospital operations.
  • Manage payroll/personal activities for all employees and support the Section Chief with faculty matters.
  • Authorize hires, terminations, leaves, and merit increases; establish fair recruitment, hiring, evaluation, promotion, disciplinary, and discharge practices.
  • Direct and supervise the section’s support staff; hire, train, develop, and evaluate subordinates.
  • Make recommendations on compensation and incentive payments; participate in faculty recruitment and processing of appointments and promotions.
