In partnership with the Safety Manager, the Safety Coordinator plays a key role in implementing and upholding Related Midwest and LR Contracting (LRC) safety standards, ensuring a safe, healthful, and incident‑free work environment for project staff and subcontractors across all sites. As an integral part of the project team, this role enforces safety expectations, supports optimal project outcomes, and fosters a proactive safety culture on every jobsite.

Responsibilities

DAILY SAFETY COORDINATION – Coordinate daily safety planning and directives in alignment with the Construction Safety Policy. Escalate unresolved issues to the Project Executive, and involve the Safety Manager as needed for higher‑level resolution. Support management of Safety Professionals from partner CMs and/or third‑party Site Safety Managers, when applicable.

SAFETY KNOWLEDGE & ENFORCEMENT – Understand, administer, and enforce OSHA regulations and all applicable federal, state, and local safety standards. Enforce company safety policies and ensure a safe work environment across all active project sites.

NEW HIRE ORIENTATIONS – Conduct new hire safety orientations and ensure all orientees are accurately and promptly entered into the company’s online tracking system.

PROJECT SUPPORT – Assist Project Managers and Superintendents in developing site‑specific safety programs and plans. Support creation and review of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for project tasks. Spend at least 50%+ of work hours performing field observations, identifying hazards, and recommending corrective actions. Support and/or conduct monthly Sitewide Safety Meetings. Perform additional duties as needed to support the project team.

SUBCONTRACTOR PRE‑PLANNING – Assist with subcontractor preconstruction safety meetings. Participate in subcontractor planning sessions and support the creation of safety plans and hazard communication programs. Review subcontractor site‑specific safety plans for completeness and alignment with project safety requirements prior to mobilization.

EQUIPMENT & SAFETY SUPPLIES – Understand and learn safe operation of construction and safety equipment to help train field personnel. Coordinate with the Safety Manager on procurement of first aid supplies, fire extinguishers, and other compliance‑related equipment.

PLANNING – Participate in project pre‑planning meetings to ensure safety is incorporated into all work plans. Verify subcontractors address project‑specific hazards through Safety Plans or JHAs prior to mobilization. Participate in Pre‑Construction Safety Planning Meetings with the Project Superintendent and Project Manager.

INCIDENT REPORTING – Assist in incident and near‑miss investigations and review associated documentations. Support root‑cause analysis and development of corrective actions and training to prevent recurrence.

SAFETY AUDITS – Ensure frequent safety audits—both LRC and subcontractor—are completed using approved safety management software. Exercise authority to immediately intervene in situations involving imminent danger to life or property. Ensure deficiencies are promptly communicated to and corrected by the Project Superintendent.

GOVERNMENTAL INSPECTIONS – Serve as point of contact for scheduled and unscheduled OSHA inspections when the Safety Manager is unavailable. Accompany inspectors, document activities, participate in conferences, and oversee timely correction of noted deficiencies. Coordinate with the Safety Manager on all follow‑up procedures.

DOCUMENTATION – Prepare, submit, organize, and maintain all required safety documentation, including:

  • Weekly documented audits
  • Toolbox talks
  • JHA review and sign‑offs
  • Pre‑Construction meeting records
  • Obtain and manage SDS documentation for all materials as part of the Hazard Communication program.
