Location: Chicago, IL (Downtown/Loop area; currently on-site with flexibility to transition to a hybrid schedule)
A well-established, mission-driven organization is seeking a Controller to oversee core accounting operations and support executive financial leadership during a period of stabilization and growth. This role is ideal for a seasoned accounting professional who is hands‑on, detail‑oriented, and comfortable serving as a technical accounting resource and thought partner to senior leadership.
The position offers meaningful responsibility, visibility, and the opportunity to strengthen processes, mentor a growing team, and contribute to the long‑term financial sustainability of the organization. Company details will be shared later in the process due to confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and continuously improve the monthly and year‑end close processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and strong documentation
- Oversee general ledger activity, reconciliations, cash management, and financial reporting
- Serve as a key accounting partner to executive leadership, providing guidance on technical accounting matters and day‑to‑day finance operations
- Supervise and develop a team of accounting professionals, including direct and indirect reports across accounting and business office functions
- Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
- Coordinate audit preparation and support external auditors
- Support accounting activities across multiple cost centers and funding streams
- Provide insight and execution support related to areas such as cash management, cost accounting, investments, acquisitions, or start‑up initiatives
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong working knowledge of debits, credits, reconciliations, and close processes
- High‑level understanding of taxation concepts applicable to both for‑profit and not‑for‑profit environments
- Advanced Excel skills (including pivot tables and lookup functions)
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership in a dynamic environment
- CPA or CMA certification
- Experience with complex funding structures and/or grant accounting
- Familiarity with MIP or similar accounting systems
- Prior experience in a nonprofit or mission‑driven organization (not required)
- Annual discretionary bonus: Approximately 3%, based on company and individual performance
