This is one of those genuinely pivotal hires and one that’s been designed with sustainability in mind.

You’ll be stepping into a senior, hands-on leadership role within a small, well-established CPA firm, where busy season is capped at 50 hours and summers are 4 day weeks. The focus here isn’t on grinding people down it’s on building a firm that grows steadily, scales up and retains good people

The firm’s lead CPA is retiring, which is why this role exists. They’re looking for someone to step into that seat with a proper handover before busy season. They don’t want to replicate the past, but for you to help shape what the next phase looks like.

This is very much a hands-on Senior Tax Manager / Director role. You’ll still be in the detail, solving complex tax and accounting issues, supporting clients directly, and acting as the technical anchor for the team, not sitting above it all.

Responsibilities

• You’ll oversee a small team of tax accountants, all at different experience levels. They’re capable, but they need a senior presence someone who can sense when to guide, when to review, and when to jump in and resolve more complex work.

• You’ll be the calm, steady influence when things get busy. The person who can mentor, teach, and hold people accountable to technical standards and who’s comfortable jumping on client calls for higher-level issues when needed.

• The client base what you’d expect in this size firm: small to mid-sized businesses across professional services, restaurants, and similar owner-managed companies. Most fall in the $2–5m revenue range, with some larger $25m+ clients.

• You’ll also work closely with an offshore CAS team in India. Each tax accountant has offshore support doing the bookkeeping, and part of your role will be ensuring quality, consistency, and strong technical standards across that structure.

Qualifications

• Strong, well-rounded public accounting tax experience

• A solid accounting background, comfortable working through issues alongside accounting managers

• A people-first leadership style - calm, clear, and supportive

A CPA is strongly preferred. They may consider someone currently an EA, but you’d need to be committed to completing your CPA.
