The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) is hiring a Tax Auditor Trainee to join its Accounting and Fiscal Administration Career Trainee Program. The role focuses on training to audit employers’ books and records for compliance with the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Act. It is a full‑time, salaried position with a starting salary of $4,586 per month and a range of $4,586 – $6,228 per month.
The position is a union role and requires eligibility to work in the United States on a full‑time basis.
Applicants will receive classroom‑based training, complete assessments, and travel to employer work sites for on‑the‑job training. Background knowledge in accounting, payroll, or auditing is highly desirable. The training program consists of up to three tests that must be passed for continued participation.
Essential Functions- Participate in an agency‑sponsored training program as a Tax Auditor Trainee for a period of up to twelve months.
- Complete assignments of increasing difficulty using a PC or laptop and agency software.
- Meet with employers and/or their legal representatives.
- Attend staff meetings, conferences, workshops, and other learning activities.
- Perform duties reasonably within the scope of the enumerated responsibilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or an allied field.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting.
- At least 15 credit hours in accounting courses, including one audit class.
- One year of experience with accounting and auditing theories, methods, and procedures applicable to government accounting and auditing.
- One year of experience examining financial records for discrepancies, including accounting and payroll records.
- One year of experience using financial software systems for tax information review.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Experience preparing and presenting comprehensive financial, accounting, and audit reports.
- Experience speaking to diverse audiences to convey policy and procedures.
- Illinois State Police background check and self‑disclosure of criminal history required.
- Fingerprint‑based background check required.
- Ability to travel, including overnight stays, and possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
- Position classified as light work; lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time and frequent lifting or carrying of up to 10 pounds.
- Ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on industry practices.
- Requirement to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State and the Executive Ethics Commission.
