The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire Automotive Mechanics. Under the immediate supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the Automotive Mechanic maintains and repairs a fleet of vehicles at a field headquarters and ensures compliance with departmental safety rules.
Essential Functions- Performs mechanical repairs on vehicles assigned to field headquarters and also conducts repairs at the site of a disabled vehicle.
- Performs regular inspection and maintenance of vehicles on an established schedule.
- Maintains accurate and timely records of all maintenance repairs performed.
- Performs minor welding and fabrication.
- Performs all other duties as assigned which are reasonably related to the duties enumerated above.
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school, or coursework in vehicle repair and maintenance, or completion of an approved training course.
- Requires experience necessary to qualify as a skilled mechanic.
- Prefers experience and extensive knowledge in the use of mechanical hand tools, machinery, and testing equipment used in equipment and motor repair, including the ability to diagnose, adjust, and correct mechanical issues.
- Prefers knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety measures.
- Prefers skill and ability to work from sketches, drawings, and blueprints as well as oral and written instructions.
- Prefers ability to weld and perform simple blacksmith operations.
- Prefers ability to work well with others.
- Prefers ability to prepare work activity reports.
- Prefers ability to perceive objects with sharpness.
- Requires successful completion of a background investigation.
- Requires pre-employment physical examination, drug and alcohol testing and random drug and alcohol testing.
- Requires valid Commercial Driver's License Class
A. - Requires occasional statewide travel with occasional overnight stays to make equipment repairs at the job site.
- Must reside within a 45-minute travel time frame from the primary work location.
- Requires overtime and on-call status during snow and ice season.
