GeneralJob Description
Operates communication systems utilizing radio, telephone, and computer equipment to aid bus drivers and the public in support of daily transit operations of demand-response and fixed-route transit services. Prepares and maintains manual and computerized files and records including operations reports, incident logs, accident reports, and data concerning service interruptions, cancellations, vehicle breakdowns, etc.; provides information to the public; dispatches personnel and equipment in response to service requests.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Perform all dispatch duties. Respond to all service request calls promptly and with courtesy. Monitor two-way radio; send and receive messages. Contact police, fire, and ambulance in emergency situations.
- Perform office tasks to assist in transit operations including tracking systems, vehicle usage, ridership.
- Schedule demand-response rides using computerized scheduling and dispatching software. Review, organize and maintain driver trip logs to maximize route efficiencies. Authorize route changes due to cancellations and/or additions, inclement weather, unsafe operating conditions, road construction or other unique situations.
- Report operational problems and incidents to supervisors. Notify supervision for replacement vehicles or drivers when needed due to breakdowns or other unforeseen emergencies. Make recommendations and propose solutions to operational issues.
- Maintain passenger information, driver hours, and mileage for reporting purposes. Prepare required reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
- Pull ridership reports from various software and compile into appropriate forms for transit Management.
- Monitor buses in and out of service and spare replacements. Schedule vehicles for maintenance, following FTA guidelines, and participate in vehicle preventative maintenance programs and activities to ensure vehicles are maintained in a safe and effective operating condition. Communicate with Fleet Maintenance employees daily.
- Provide information and general assistance to callers, city staff, and the public regarding transit policies, procedures and processes in a courteous manner.
- Work with transit Management to update and maintain the Cheyenne Transit Program website.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Attend required annual trainings.
- Attend work when scheduled, on a regular and dependable basis.
- Assist with special projects as necessary or as assigned.
- If licensed, you may be required to act in the capacity of Bus Driver on an as needed basis.

If you do not have the proper license, one may be obtained with approval at the Transit Administrator’s discretion, based on operational needs of the system.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of transit system operations, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret bus routes and schedules.
- Knowledge of customer service practices and ability to demonstrate them.
- Knowledge of two-way radio operation, procedures, and etiquette.
- Knowledge of area geography and streets of city.
- Ability to communicate politely and cooperatively with passengers, employees, and members of the public.
- Ability to exercise tact and sound judgement when resolving operations and passenger issues.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, managers, and the executive leaders.
- If licensed, ability to operate a passenger bus safely and effectively. Operate two-way radio and wheelchair lifts.
- Strong skills in problem solving and conflict resolution.
- Ability to work independently and to exercise reasonable judgement in decision making.
