Summary

This position is responsible for maintaining boilers and heating systems; identifying repair and/or replacement needs; providing necessary information on the proper uses of the equipment; and assisting other skilled trades as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Job Tasks Descriptions
  • 1. Service and repair heating systems for school district facilities. This includes working on hot water and steam boiler systems that run on both natural gas and fuel oil. Diagnoses problems and/or failures in heating systems (e.g. pumps, boilers, controls, thermostats, etc.) to identify equipment and/or systems repair and replacement needs.
  • 2. Service and repair large circulation pumps, steam traps, pneumatic valves, digital actuators, bearings, seals, strainers, condensate pumping systems, acid neutralizing system, and feed water tanks. Inspects systems and their components (e.g. heating units, building exhaust fans, ventilation units, etc.) to ensure safety and identifying necessary repairs and providing an ongoing program of preventive maintenance.
  • 3. Repair leaks in hot water, steam, fuel oil, air, and natural gas lines by welding, brazing, and threading new pipes to facilitate repairs.
  • 4. Install large pumps, motors, heating coils, heat exchangers, and miscellaneous tanks using chain hoists, gantry cranes and hydraulic lifting equipment.
  • 5. Maintain the appropriate level of glycol at the proper strength for all hot water systems and operate at recommended pressure.
  • 6. Clean, tune, and inspect boilers per manufacturers recommendations and record all maintenance task in logbook.
  • 7. Research products and purchase appropriate items to be kept in inventory for maintenance and emergency repairs using school district purchasing card or coordinate issuance of purchase order. Must be able to communicate effectively with manufacturer on certain items regarding technical support required for repairs.
  • 8. Respond to emergency requests for assistance to protect students, staff, and property from harm both during and after hours.
  • 9. Monitor, control, and adjust heating systems via the school districts three building automated control systems remotely by laptop computer.
  • 10. Complete assigned tasks and document all work completed on the Cherwell work order system.
  • 11. Participate/contribute in bi-weekly safety meetings and complete annual safety objectives of the department.
  • 12. Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Related Work Experience
  • High school diploma, or equivalent, required
  • 1-3 years’ experience in boiler or piping repairs, required
  • Vocational or post-secondary course work in related field, preferred
Licenses, Registrations or Certifications
  • Criminal background check required for hire.
  • Valid state issued Driver’s License, required
  • Must obtain and maintain Defensive Driving certificate by the conclusion of the district-provided training course
  • Journeyman Plumber or Steam Fitter license, required for hire
