In this leadership role, you will guide and inspire Project Development Road Design Teams, including the Utilities Section, Design Software Support Section, and the Design Quality Review Section. You’ll help shape critical infrastructure projects, ensuring design excellence, innovation, and the highest standards of safety and quality for communities across the state.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe listed functions are illustrative and may not include every duty performed at the job level.
- Directly supervise, mentor, and manage principal engineers and team leaders for Project Development Road Design Teams, the Utilities Section, Design Support Section, and the Design Quality Review Section
- Collaborate with other project development engineers to evaluate workload, adjust assignments, and assign design projects
- Monitor the Utilities Section to ensure compliance with regulations and policies for utilities within statewide rights-of-way
- Provide guidance to the Design Support Section on consistent design and drafting standards for highway projects
- Oversee the Design Quality Review Section to deliver high-quality highway construction documents for bid letting
- Prepare reports and conduct reconnaissance inspections directly or via consultants
- Prepare and execute the annual budget for Project Development
- Serve on the AASHTO Committee on Design
- Coordinate with other programs and districts to address issues and improve efficiency
- Monitor design progress, assist teams with issues and problems
- Attend PCS meetings to review projects under design within each District; report project status
- Review and approve special provisions
- Monitor preliminary engineering expenditures on projects
- Hold monthly design team meetings
- Conduct and coordinate annual training for design teams
- Attend and participate in public meetings
- Assist with informational requests from executive staff and legislature
- Attend periodic workshops and training to increase skills and knowledge
Preference will be given to candidates with road design and/or road construction experience.
In-state and out-of-state travel required.
KNOWLEDGE- Knowledge of WYDOT's policies and procedures
- Knowledge of WYDOT's plan development process
- Knowledge of the Standard Specifications for Road & Bridge Construction
- Knowledge of the WYDOT Road Design Manual, AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, and WYDOT Design Guides
- Knowledge of federal and state rules and policies governing highway design and operations
- Ability to deal with difficult people and situations
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to build and maintain good relationships
Education: Bachelor s Degree (in Engineering)
Experience: 4-6 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering) with knowledge at the level of a Staff Engineer
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Professional Engineer (PE) License Required at time of hire;
Wyoming PE required within one year of hire date
