Job Summary

36 hours per week (pro rata salary for part time post). The Hospice of the Good Shepherd offers an outstanding level of care with minimum registered nurse to patient ratios of 1:5 for the 24‑hour period and 1:4 for all staff. We provide excellent individualized nursing care that meets each patient’s unique needs, promotes patients’ wishes, and supports families and friends.

We value leveraging your knowledge and skills while gaining specialist expertise in symptom control. We seek an experienced, dynamic, and motivated registered nurse ready to provide efficient, compassionate support, progressing a career in palliative care.

Main duties of the post holder
  • Be responsible for the initial and ongoing assessment of nursing needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of effective care plans.
  • Act as nurse in charge when competent to do so, directly assisting in the provision of a high quality clinical and organisational service, including dealing with complex situations and taking appropriate action in emergency and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Encourage and enable patients to be involved in their care activities and contribute to decisions wherever possible.
Core responsibilities
  • Initial and ongoing assessment of nursing needs, develop, implement and evaluate care plans.
  • Answer and respond to out of hours queries via the hospice advice line when competent to do so.
  • Provide specialist palliative and supportive nursing care, remain up to date on practice.
  • Encourage patient involvement in care decisions and act as mentor and role model.
  • Complete organisational competencies within the first 6 months.
  • Take responsibility for a specific aspect of care after probation, acting as an information resource.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Knowledge, experience and qualifications
  • Passion and motivation for comfort, dignity, independence and choice.
  • Experience caring for patients with advanced progressive disease and supporting end‑of‑life families.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, manage time efficiently and work in a team.
  • Experience leading or managing on an occasional basis in a community setting.
  • Current Level 1 registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Evidence of recent professional development, ideally with specialist palliative care.
  • Registered nurse, willingness to study to diploma/degree level and further develop.
Skills and attributes
  • High standard holistic nursing care in a palliative setting.
  • Empathy, compassion, dignity and respect for all people.
  • Effective communication with patients, carers and other health and social care professionals.
  • Problem‑solving skills and the ability to produce workable solutions.
  • Good organisational skills and reflective practice.
  • Leadership qualities, motivation to work independently and as part of a team.
Essential criteria
  • Punctual, good health and attendance record with occupational health clearance.
  • Post registration experience, specifically working with people living with life‑limiting illness.
  • Experience working in a multi‑professional team.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in a hospice, acute or community setting.
  • Management skills, phlebotomy and cannulation.
  • Familiarity with clinical governance framework and risk management strategies.
  • Nursing degree, teaching qualification and evidence of ongoing professional development.
