Terminal Manager

Chesapeake, VA

Position Summary

The Terminal Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and profitability of multi-terminal transportation operations supporting port drayage and regional over-the-road (OTR) van freight. This role oversees day‑to‑day operations across three operating fleets, manages a team of direct reports, and ensures safe, efficient, and compliant transportation services across the ports of Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington (NC), and Norfolk (VA). The Terminal Manager provides strategic and hands‑on leadership for approximately 110 tractors and drivers, including both company‑employed drivers and independent contractors, and is accountable for the successful execution of 25,000–30,000 container moves annually.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage all terminal operations across three fleet locations, ensuring consistent execution of company standards, policies, and procedures
  • Oversee port drayage and regional OTR van operations, balancing service performance, cost control, and asset utilization
  • Provide direct leadership to a team of 6 direct reports, including operations, dispatch, and supervisory staff
  • Participate as a representative of Givens Transportation in Truckload and Maritime Association organizations and meetings
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
  • Champion a strong safety culture across all terminals and driver groups
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, port authority, and company safety requirements
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and service failures; implement corrective actions and preventive measures
Fleet & Driver Management
  • Oversee utilization and productivity of 110 tractors and associated drivers, including company drivers and independent contractors
  • Manage driver performance through coaching, mentoring, discipline, and corrective action when required
  • Partner with recruiting and onboarding teams to support driver hiring, retention, and engagement
Financial & Performance Management
  • Own terminal-level P&L performance, focusing on fleet profitability, cost control, and margin improvement
  • Monitor KPIs related to utilization, revenue per tractor, cost per move, driver productivity, and service metrics

    Develop and execute plans to improve operational efficiency and profitability
Dispatch Operations & Process Improvement
  • Provide leadership, training, and support to dispatch teams to ensure effective load planning and execution
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across dispatch, yard operations, and driver communications
  • Standardize best practices across terminals while allowing flexibility for local market conditions
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Collaborate with sales, customer service, maintenance, safety, and finance teams to ensure aligned execution
  • Support customer relationships by ensuring operational commitments are met and service issues are resolved promptly
Qualifications Required
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in transportation operations, preferably in port drayage and/or regional OTR environments
  • Proven direct supervisory experience managing operations staff and drivers
  • Strong working knowledge of DOT regulations, driver management, and fleet operations
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation, Logistics, Business, or a related field
  • Experience managing multi-terminal or multi-fleet operations
  • Experience overseeing both company‑employed drivers and independent contractors
