Overview

Shipping & Receiving Clerk – Industrial Manufacturing

Location: Portsmouth, VA

Schedule: On-site, Full Time

Placement Type: Contract-to-Hire

Pay Range: $20.00–$30.00/hr (based on experience)

Step into a critical role supporting the flow of materials, equipment, and documentation in a busy industrial machining environment. As a Shipping & Receiving Clerk, you’ll be responsible for inspecting incoming materials, managing inventory accuracy, supporting logistics, and ensuring all documentation meets strict production and quality requirements. If you have experience in industrial shipping/receiving, material inspection, and forklift operation, this is a great opportunity with long-term potential.

What

You’ll Do
  • Receive materials and equipment, verifying quantities and descriptions against purchase orders.
  • Inspect incoming items for damage, defects, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Review Material Test Reports and compare specifications for compliance.
  • Approve or reject materials and document all findings on internal inspection forms.
  • Tag, label, and route conforming and nonconforming materials appropriately.
  • Scan, save, and organize Certificates of Conformance and Material Test Reports for Quality review.
  • Maintain a clean, organized shipping/receiving area to support efficient operations.
  • Help maintain accurate inventory levels by coordinating with Production and Quality teams.
  • Pick up or drop off parts, calibrated equipment, and materials at local vendors as needed (company vehicle provided once hired permanently).
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of materials, equipment, and assets.
  • Support additional tasks as needed based on production workflow.
Qualifications
  • Forklift and pallet jack certified (or strong recent experience).
  • Experience in industrial or manufacturing shipping/receiving
    .
  • Ability to interpret specifications, documentation, and order sheets.
  • Working knowledge of WMS systems and data entry.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
    .
  • Strong attention to detail for material inspection and documentation accuracy.
  • Basic understanding of materials, metals, and the periodic table of elements
    .
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs consistently.
  • Clean and valid driving record (required for operating a company vehicle post-hire).
Preferred Skills
  • Experience working with industrial machinery or heavy manufacturing parts.
  • Familiarity with SAP or other ERP inventory systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort with quality documentation processes.
  • Previous experience reviewing Material Test Reports, CoCs, or other compliance documents.
