Position: Lead Medical Support Assistant (Health Administration Service)

Overview

Lead Medical Support Assistant at North Battlefield in Chesapeake. You will exercise sound judgment in assigning a priority order to requests or duties which best serve the interest of the patient and the clinics.

    Experience:

    One year of experience equivalent to the GS-6 Medical Support Assistant (Advanced) grade level
  • The Advanced MSA provides specialized and expert administrative patient support while working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model
  • Work involves specialized administrative judgment and the flexible use of a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics - specialties - and/or care in the community resources
  • Recommends changes to existing clinic procedures based on current administrative guidelines
  • Expertise in utilizing numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics involved in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model
  • Coordinates with the patient care team to review clinic appointment availability utilization to ensure that clinic schedules are closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinics - and makes adjustments as necessary
  • MSAs at this level develop and/or maintain effective and efficient communication with the patient - interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model teams - VA medical centers - and other agencies (e.g.

    - assist with communications during the inpatient to outpatient discharge)
  • communicate with non-VA medical facilities
  • prepare correspondence to notify patients of normal lab results
  • manage a system for follow-up care such as consults - tests - etc.

Duties
  • Incumbent functions as a key member of the Health Administration Service (HAS) and supports Primary Care - Specialty Care - Mental Health - Inpatient and Outpatient Clinics
  • The Lead Medical Support Assistant (MSA) serves as direct support to the Supervisory MSA providing support to Primary Care - Specialty Care - Mental Health - Inpatient and Outpatient Clinics
  • The Lead MSA provides comprehensive - detailed - and on-the-job training to all new clinic personnel in the clinic unit area
  • The mission of this section is to provide administrative and clerical assistance - guidance - and support to the professional staff and to manage the day-to-day activity in Outpatient/Inpatient Clinics using established policies and procedures as they relate to administrative support responsibilities in patient care
  • Work is primarily sedentary; however, the incumbent will have episodes of standing - twisting - bending - sitting - and carrying of supplies in support of the clinical areas assigned
