Position: Bacteriologist I
Are you passionate about protecting public health and ensuring safe, high-quality drinking water? The City of Chesapeake is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Bacteriologist I to join our laboratory team. This role plays a vital part in safeguarding our community by monitoring water quality and supporting regulatory compliance through precise laboratory testing and analysis.

What You'll Do:
  • Collect, schedule, and analyze water and wastewater samples in accordance with established procedures and regulations
  • Prepare culture media, reagents, and laboratory materials necessary for bacteriological testing
  • Perform laboratory testing and analysis to detect and evaluate bacteria and other indicators of water quality
  • Accurately record laboratory results and maintain detailed records of research, testing, and analysis
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries related to water quality, laboratory results, and public health concerns
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, including sterilization, calibration, inventory, and ordering
  • Utilize computer systems for data entry, documentation, and reporting
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and outside agencies
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support laboratory operations

Required Qualifications
Vocational/Educational Requirement:Requires engineering or scientific Bachelor's degree in chemistry, bacteriology, or closely related field.

Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards ,and possession of or ability to acquire Class II Water and Wastewater Works Certificate

Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written communication skills for logging data and maintaining records
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (preferred)
  • A genuine interest in environmental science, public health, and water quality
