Position OverviewThe Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, and delivering accurate, timely financial reporting. This role supervises the bookkeeper and serves as a key financial partner to the Executive Team. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with analytical thinking, systems organization, and the ability to communicate financial insights clearly to non-financial leaders.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and supervise the bookkeeper to ensure accurate transaction processing.
- Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting requirements, including proper revenue recognition for donations and grants.
- Review and approve monthly journal entries, reconciliations, and financial close processes.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and board-ready reporting packages.
- Develop budget-to-actual variance analyses and provide clear explanations to leadership.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial policies.
- Support audit preparation and serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
- Provide cash flow forecasting and financial modeling support for strategic initiatives.
- Respond to ad hoc executive requests with thoughtful, data-driven analysis.
- Continuously improve reporting tools and financial systems (advanced Excel required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
- 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience (nonprofit experience strongly preferred).
- Deep understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting principles.
- Experience preparing financial statements and supporting external audits.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and process improvement mindset.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly and effectively to leadership and board members.
- Clean, accurate books and a smooth monthly close process.
- Timely, clear financial reporting that supports executive decision-making.
- Strong internal controls and audit readiness.
- Financial insights that help leadership allocate resources wisely and responsibly.
