Customer Service Rep
The Scale Attendant assists customers hauling residential and specific types of commercial waste to SPSA transfer stations or directly to the landfill. Greets customers to verify residency, record visits, weigh vehicles, and screen for unauthorized waste. Operates industrial scale recording devices to record inbound and outbound truck weights to determine tonnage of waste disposed. Collects payments by credit card or commercial account.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Scale Attendant Supervisor with important day‑to‑day input provided by the supervisor of the worksite (typically a Transfer Station Supervisor). Full‑time Scale Attendants work rotating schedules across all SPSA scale house locations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Greets customers to verify residency, visits, weigh vehicles, and screen for unauthorized waste. Informs customers of proper disposal policies and procedures.
- Accurately weighs trucks, records data utilizing proper data codes, vehicle identification information, customer account number and waste type to generate credit transaction tickets for customers and reviewed by SPSA departments in a timely and efficient manner.
- Screens trucks for hazardous or unauthorized waste visually and by asking the driver to verify load compositions.
- As needed, reroutes trucks to site supervisor for examination of load to screen for hazardous or unauthorized waste without unnecessarily disrupting traffic flow.
- Informs customers of proper disposal policies and procedures in a clear, concise, and courteous manner.
- Processes customer transactions smoothly and efficiently, keeping traffic moving efficiently while maintaining excellent levels of accuracy. Effectively deals with varying rate structures and load compositions.
- Receives and handles phone calls and face‑to‑face interactions in an efficient, professional, and friendly manner. Provides useful directions and information to customers.
- Ensures scales and recording devices are operating properly. Reports scale malfunctions to the Scale Attendant Supervisor or local Supervisor.
- Processes customer credit card transactions and ensures balances are correct at the end of each shift.
- Assists with training new staff as needed.
- Required to rotate among various SPSA work locations and be adaptive as schedules, vacancies, and operational needs require.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Required Education - High school diploma or the equivalent required.
- Required Experience - One year of demonstrated experience in customer service, data entry, scale operation, and cashiering.
- Required Licenses - Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation required to work across SPSA scale house locations.
- An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
- Work across SPSA scale house locations as scheduled or needed.
- Utilize interpersonal relations skills to work effectively with customers, employees, and the general public.
- Communicate effectively with customers in‑person and by phone.
- Learn and accurately operate SPSA scale facilities.
- Multi‑task effectively to work with inbound and outbound customers and answer phone calls.
- Make simple mathematical computations.
- Perform computerized data entry accurately and rapidly.
- Troubleshoot minor data processing problems.
- Perform credit card payment transactions.
- Recognize and identify various waste types.
- Learn and accurately apply changing tipping fees and data codes.
- Inform customers of disposal policies and procedures in a clear, concise, and courteous manner.
- Operate computer to record & verify customer information and complete transactions.
- Work independently and follow supervisor instructions in a reliable manner.
This position will work in the scale house office at an open window area where tractor trailers come and go by in close proximity throughout the entire shift. Depending on wind direction, this activity can bring dust and exhaust fumes in through the open window of the scale house to where the Scale Attendant is located.
