Position Summary
Working under direct supervision, coordinate the implementation of safety policies, procedures, and programs to ensure workplace safety and health. Develop and assist in leading safety communications that follows regulatory practices/rules, recognizes and reports hazards, initiates and promotes a World Class safety culture.
Duties And Responsibilities- Prepare safety and hazard reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
- Maintain safety statistics and submit reports of performance as requested; prepare and issue reports as required by local/federal agencies.
- Coordinate and participate in emergency response to spills of chemicals and other hazardous waste.
- Assist in advising employees on the requirements for the effective use of safety plans, procedures and guidelines.
- Ensure proper maintenance and inspection of facility safety equipment, such as, PPE, fire suppression, respiratory, HAZMAT, etc.
- Maintain the injury and incident records, reports, investigations, and statistical data. Examples: entering data into software programs, trending and reporting statistical data for Management and HSSE Reviews.
- Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, or occupational illnesses to determine causes and preventative measures.
- Report and review findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections, or environmental testing.
- Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes.
- Inspect and audit facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation and management system compliance.
- Assist with worker training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment.
- Review employee safety programs to determine their adequacy.
- Interview employees to obtain information about work environments and workplace incidents.
- Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses and accidents.
REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in occupational safety and industrial hygiene, specifically within a shipyard, industrial or manufacturing setting.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance issued by the U.S. Department of Defense.
- In addition to the security clearance, this position may require an additional background screening for base access.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen who is not a dual citizen of any other country.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Health, Safety, and the Environment (HSE).
- Trained in RCRA and DOT waste handling.
- Five years’ experience in occupational safety and industrial hygiene, specifically within a shipyard, industrial or manufacturing setting.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of environment, health and safety regulations including good working knowledge of the NAVSEA standard items.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and guidelines for general industry and shipyard.
- Working knowledge of Virginia DEQ and Federal EPA requirements for waste, water, and air permitting.
