EMS Communications Officer – Chesapeake
Location: Chesapeake, VA (in office)
Shifts: 8, 10, or 12‑hour variations
About us: Hospital to Home LLC serves as the Commonwealth of Virginia’s premier transportation provider. Our services include ambulatory, wheelchair, and stretcher transport as well as Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, Critical Care, and Organ Transports.
About the role: Seeking a highly organized and detail‑oriented individual to join our team as a Communications Officer as part of the Hospital to Home Communications team. The Communications Officer answers calls for service, schedules trips according to availability, and dispatches units in a timely and efficient manner. This position requires strong communication skills, the ability to analyze situations quickly, and excellent multitasking abilities.
Must be able to visualize locations of units and possess critical thinking skills required to efficiently and accurately dispatch trips.
Responsibilities:
- Receive and prioritize incoming calls and requests for service.
- Dispatch appropriate personnel or resources based on the nature of the call.
- Monitor and track the status of ongoing assignments.
- Coordinate with field personnel to ensure timely response and resolution.
- Maintain accurate records of all calls, assignments, and actions taken.
- Communicate relevant information to appropriate parties in a clear and concise manner.
- Provide support and guidance to field personnel as needed.
- Utilize phone systems and computer software to facilitate dispatching activities.
- Other tasks assigned by Leadership.
Conditions of employment:
- Candidates selected for employment are subject to a fingerprint-based background screening, as required by the Virginia Office of EMS. Candidates who refuse to be fingerprinted will be denied employment with H2H Emergency Services.
Requirements:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language.
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Have an acceptable motor vehicle record in compliance with company policy.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and make effective decisions.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution abilities.
- Proficient typing skills for data entry purposes.
- Not have been convicted or found guilty of any crime, offense, or regulatory violation, or participated in other prohibited conduct identified in state EMS regulations as found in 12
VAC5-31-910.
Preferred qualifications:
- Previous emergency dispatching experience or medical knowledge.
- Familiarity with Law Enforcement and/or Fire/EMS operations.
- Current certification through the VA OEMS as an EMT or higher preferred.
