Benefits Program Aide I – Seasonal/Substitute
This is a seasonal substitute position. The role is limited to a maximum of 500 work hours per fiscal year.
Position SummaryThe purpose of this position is to perform clerical work related to the determination and re‑determination of individuals and families applying for financial, medical, or nutritional assistance under government programs. The assistant will screen applicants, maintain records, perform routine clerical tasks, and produce reports under general supervision.
Duties- Assist applicants with completing required forms and provide information to determine eligibility for programs and services.
- Maintain client records and prepare routine monthly reports for cases of responsibility.
- Check and correct applicant data; prepare eligible cases for transfer.
- Update client records, monitor payments, review contracts and payment histories.
- Screen telephone calls related to public assistance programs; provide routine information.
- Coordinate appeals and fair hearings; retrieve, send, and maintain requests from Quality Control.
- Assist clients with transportation for medical verification, appointments, banking, and shopping; schedule appointments to coincide with transport.
- Set up paperwork for daycare and communicate with Housing Authority for clients requiring housing assistance.
- Perform routine office tasks such as correspondence, data entry, mail processing, filing, faxing, telephoning, and photocopying.
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions; perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum six months of experience in customer service or general clerical work involving public contact.
- Basic knowledge of human services eligibility benefits and state VaCMS computer programs.
- Experience with client interviews and application intake.
- Documenting and inputting data, maintaining case files.
- Managing appeals, sending requests for quality control, and answering telephone inquiries.
Job Type: Seasonal/Substitute
Hours: Up to 25 hours per week, up to 500 hours per fiscal year
Location: Chesapeake, VA
Pay: $17.66 per hour
Employees may be requested to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or at alternate locations in response to short‑term departmental needs or city‑wide emergencies.
