The City of Chesapeake seeks a highly skilled, collaborative, and proactive Accountant III to join our central Finance team. The Accountant III is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the City’s General Ledger and supporting timely and reliable financial reporting. They review and post journal entries for City departments, manage reconciliations for thirteen bank accounts, and support accurate month‑end and year‑end close processes.
The Accountant III also serves as the Finance liaison for the Conference Center, Integrated Behavioral Health, Human Services, Parks, Recreation & Tourism, and the Treasurer’s Office. They review monthly and year‑end financial reporting, provide technical accounting guidance, and support the development and improvement of accounting processes and internal controls. The Accountant III assists with the preparation and analysis of financial statements and disclosures for the City’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and supports internal and external audits by preparing schedules, responding to inquiries, and providing documentation and analysis.
- Interact with staff, departments, and external agencies to ensure accuracy of accounts and provide accounting support.
- Verify, monitor, and reconcile accounts.
- Act as Finance Subject Matter Expert liaison to assigned departments.
- Review and post journal entries for accuracy, completeness, and proper reporting.
- Manage reconciliations for 13 bank accounts, ensuring accurate and timely month‑end and year‑end closing processes.
- Assist with the preparation, review, and analysis of financial statements, schedules, journal entries, and disclosures for the City’s ACFR.
- Provide information and assistance to internal and external auditors.
- Develop new accounting policies and procedures as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. Master’s degree desired.
- Minimum four years of related, full‑time equivalent experience.
- Certified Public Accountant certification desired.
- Working knowledge of general ledger functions and accounting principles.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
