About the role
Our Medical Wards at St Peter's Hospital in Surrey are looking for a compassionate, motivated and skilled Band 4 Nursing Associate to join the Medical Division. This role is for NMC registered Nursing Associates ready to work as part of the nursing and multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality care for patients presenting with a wide range of medical needs across general medicine, respiratory, cardiology and elderly care wards.
Key Responsibilities- Practice under indirect supervision in all medical ward areas, reflecting values of teamwork, proper communication and escalation.
- Contribute to assessment, planning and implementation of individual care for assigned patients under agreed pathways, ensuring safe practice and high standards.
- Implement and monitor patient care following nursing care plans and patient pathways, and report progress to registered practitioner/s.
- Carry out regular observations, maintain accurate documentation, identify deteriorating patients and follow escalation procedures defined in the patient pathways, including initiating basic life support for a collapsed patient until medical help arrives.
- Assist with safe transfers of patients within the wards and other departments; perform hospital transfer and handover of patient care for agreed patients.
- Provide clinical skills such as recording a 12‑lead ECG, inserting peripheral cannulation and venepuncture, female and male urinary catheterisation, minor wound dressings and oral medication administration. Maintain up‑to‑date, comprehensive records of clinical care in line with NMC Standards for Record Keeping.
- Actively follow protocols for internal and external major incidents, including flu pandemic response.
- Identify and care for patients with mental health needs and vulnerable patients lacking capacity, applying knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
- Maintain professional communication and attitudes with service users and colleagues; keep service users informed of waiting times and planned care pathways.
- Adhere to policies and procedures designed to prevent hospital‑acquired infection, monitor and maintain unit equipment, and report problems promptly.
- Be proficient in the information technology systems used within the wards; report staff sickness/absence immediately to the nurse in charge.
- Take personal responsibility for professional development and keep up to date with current practices; support HCAs and other trainee Band 4s in their role development.
- Work within the agreed competency framework, achieving specialist skills and maintaining competence.
- Report any complaints, accidents, untoward incidents or unusual occurrences to the Head of Nursing, ensuring remedial action is taken to prevent recurrence and completing incident forms / DATIX where appropriate.
- Participate with Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses, Head of Nursing and Matrons in planning and implementation of quality and risk management initiatives and targets (CNST, RPST, controls assurance).
- Assist in maintaining evidence‑based quality standards that are regularly audited and participate in agreed changes in practice.
- Participate in agreed programmes of clinical benchmarking with the Practice Development team.
- Support and supervise junior staff to promote patient safety and well‑being.
- Assist Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses and deputies in orientation and induction of new staff; ensure appropriate paperwork is completed, processed and that staff acquire the necessary clinical competencies.
- Actively participate in the Trust’s professional supervision programme as a supervisor and as a supervisee, and report untoward incidents, accidents, concerns or near‑misses, dealing effectively with patients’ or relatives’ complaints.
- Work within the boundaries of medication administration as per Trust guidelines; do not receive patients directly from the ambulance service as they require triage by a registered nurse.
- Report immediately to the shift leader/nurse in charge any safeguarding issue or high‑risk patient; do not be left unsupervised in any area of the emergency department.
- Carry out any other duties that reasonably fit within the broad scope of this grade and type of work, provided they are fully explained and the postholder feels competent.
