The Recreational Therapist is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating approved recreational programs for patients in treatment. Duties include conducting recreational therapy groups, documenting sessions within 24 hours, coordinating community‑based activities for patients in PHP and IOP levels of care, and more.
CoreJob Duties
- Facilitate recreational therapy groups and document session notes within 24 hours in accordance with treatment plan goals.
- Create evidenced‑based recreational therapy curriculum.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to ensure 100% group attendance and participation.
- Observe, assess, and record patient participation and progress during recreational sessions.
- Plan, organize, and direct recreational activities to facilitate patient recovery and well‑being, which may include off‑site outings.
- Coordinate and facilitate activities committee meetings to ensure distribution of monthly activities calendar.
- Ensure inventory of supplies are provided on‑site.
- Assist clinical team to develop a treatment plan to meet recreational needs of the patient.
- Use substance abuse and co‑occurring therapeutic interventions and de‑escalation techniques to assist patients with accomplishing all treatment goals and successfully completing treatment.
- Prepare and submit reports and charts to treatment team to reflect patient progress.
- Use information from medical records, staff and patients to assess patient capabilities and interests.
- Counsel and encourage patients to develop leisure activities.
- Evaluate effectiveness of services provided with the assistance of the Clinical Director.
- Assist the clinical team with patient interventions when needed.
- Maintain positive relationships with all staff.
- Maintain healthy boundaries with patients and staff.
- Ask for and accept feedback from supervisors.
- Provide a safe and therapeutic environment to all staff and patients.
- Communicate significant patient developments to supervisor.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and contribute to the success of the organization.
- Pursue professional development through participation in education and training programs.
- Contribute positively to the morale of other staff members.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
- Minimum high school diploma required; post‑secondary education preferred.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience preferred.
- Good driving record meeting safety and company insurance standards.
- National or State Certification in Recreation Therapy required.
- CPR and Standard First Aid certification required.
- Knowledge of the Principles and Practices of the discipline.
- Adherence to the Association for Ambulatory Healthcare Code of Ethics.
- Knowledge of Joint Commission Standards.
- Proficiency in communication and written skills.
- Knowledge of State & Federal statutes regarding patient confidentiality.
- Knowledge of Drug‑Free Workplace Policies.
- Knowledge of Workplace Violence policies.
