We are seeking a Dredging Inspector to support NJDOT Office of Maritime Resources’ dredging and marine construction projects. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of dredging or maritime construction inspection experience, with proven ability to monitor contractor operations for compliance with federal, state, and environmental regulations. Responsibilities will include daily field inspection of dredging operations, contractor oversight, production and compliance documentation, and coordination with project engineers and regulatory agencies.
Candidates with experience in confined disposal facilities (CDFs), Geo Tube laydown areas, beach nourishment, wetland delineations, and NJDEP/FEMA compliance reporting are strongly preferred. We are looking for a dependable professional with strong technical writing skills, field leadership, and the ability to represent client interests on-site while ensuring safety, quality, and environmental stewardship.
- Conduct research, gather scientific information and data, and lead field investigations.
- Determine or develop best methodology and technical approaches for conducting analysis in field work; set up test equipment as necessary to obtain scientific data.
- Using established prescribed templates, prepare data analysis, modeling, written reports, maps, etc. as appropriate to support findings for the natural or man‑made environment in the study area.
- Review and evaluate technical reports and plans of scientific aspects of proposed projects for environmental review, including permitting and development of mitigation plans.
- Examine and evaluate present and future potential environmental science effects relating to the planning, design, and construction of proposed projects.
- Serve as task lead or principal author in the preparation of reports, graphs, and diagrams on scientific aspects relating to specific projects.
- Provide technical support to project managers as situations arise during construction that require scientific assistance.
- Assist in organizing, preparation of public meetings.
- Attend various meetings with clients, other engineering firms, and staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field and 4 years relevant experience.
- Master’s Degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field and 3 years of relevant experience.
- Generate original data and apply new or established analytical methods in support of environmental conditions and studies.
- Stay current with state‑of‑the‑art scientific articles and trends to assess findings and relevance for environmental documentation and permits.
- Assess and synthesize disparate information for reports.
- Serve as the field lead to assess habitat characteristics, identify issues of environmental concern, and complete field surveys with guidance from the Field Investigator.
- Prepare field safety plans.
- Possess knowledge to gain a professional certification in established analytical methods.
- NJDOT Dredging Inspection Experience (3 years).
- FEMA Compliance Documentation preparation.
- NJDEP Compliance Documentation.
- Experience with Wetland Delineation.
- Construction inspection experience other than dredging.

The approximate pay range for New Jersey is $79,863.05 – $. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
