Compensation$23.11–$23.11 per hour. Substitute hours are paid the month following completion of work.
Other CompensationPaid training: 32 hours classroom training, 20 hours behind‑the‑wheel training. District covers cost of testing, required physical, fingerprinting, and reimburses CDL licensing fee.
Degree EnhancementSalary enhancement based on degree:
- AA – $0.50 per hour
- BA – $1.00 per hour
- MA – $1.50 per hour
- PhD – $2.00 per hour
Upon reaching 630 hours worked, substitutes become eligible for and are offered medical, dental, vision, and basic life and AD&DD insurance through SEBB.
General DescriptionThe substitute school bus driver fills vacant routes as needed and is directly responsible to the directors of transportation for operating school buses and transporting students to and from school.
Duties and Responsibilities- Know, understand, and apply practices of the School Bus Driver Handbook published by S.P.I. and the Cheney School District Standard Operating Procedure Handbook.
- Drive buses on regularly scheduled routes or on field trips or activity trips.
- Fuel and clean bus.
- Maintain control over passengers as related to safety.
- Participate in bus driver training courses established by O.S.P.I.
- Must be able to perform Cheney School District pre and post‑trip inspections.
- Keep supervisor informed of bus condition and accidents.
- Report any accident or law infraction to director immediately.
- Must be at least 22 years old.
- Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license with necessary endorsements.
- Must meet physical requirements established by Washington State law.
- Must have five years experience as a licensed driver.
- Must have and maintain a good driving record.
- Must have a high school education or the equivalent.
- Must be able to maintain good rapport with students, staff, and the public.
- Must be able to work in a team setting.
NOTE:
If the application is submitted and DOT physical and permits are on file prior to July 11, 2025, paid training will begin on Monday, July 14.
